Sibanye-Stillwater is investing in longer-term industrial applications for platinum-group metals to replace declining autocatalyst demand, the company announced at its South Africa Capital Markets Day on June 23. Initiatives include substituting iridium with ruthenium in proton-exchange-membrane electrolyser catalysts with Heraeus, a palladium-based hydrogen purification application, and a multiyear programme with Johnson Matthey and Valterra focused on identifying, developing and commercialising industrial PGM applications, with Sales & Marketing EVP Kleantha Pillay noting that industrial demand is "stickier" and less likely to flood the market.
COO describes 70-km PGM footprint as one of planet's biggest metal accumulationsSibanye-Stillwater COO Richard Cox has described the company's 70 km of contiguous PGM operations on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex as "probably one of the biggest single metal accumulations on the planet", highlighting the upper-group-two reef's significantly higher value per square metre than Merensky owing to higher rhodium, ruthenium and chrome grades. Brownfield UG2 projects are expected to maintain the 1.5-million-ounce underground production profile and increase the lower-risk UG2 contribution to 80% by 2035, with Marikana holding 45 years of mine life and Rustenburg 32 years.
