Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone

Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone is a special economic zone located in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The zone is designed to attract investment in manufacturing, logistics and value-added processing industries by offering tax incentives, customs benefits and streamlined regulatory procedures. It is strategically positioned adjacent to the Port of Richards Bay, one of the largest and busiest ports in Africa, and benefits from access to road, rail and maritime transport networks. The development zone focuses on sectors including metals beneficiation, chemicals, agro-processing and energy, leveraging the region's industrial base and export infrastructure. Operators within the zone can access duty-free importation of raw materials and capital equipment for manufacturing destined for export markets. Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone is managed by a dedicated authority under South Africa's special economic zone programme, which aims to drive industrialisation, job creation and regional economic development. The zone forms part of the broader Richards Bay industrial complex, which hosts aluminium smelters, mineral processing plants and bulk handling facilities. It was established to diversify the local economy and enhance South Africa's competitiveness in global value chains.
