Praseodymium

Praseodymium is a rare-earth element with the chemical symbol Pr and atomic number 59. It is a soft, silvery-white metal that belongs to the lanthanide series of the periodic table. Praseodymium is classified as a critical mineral owing to its strategic importance in advanced manufacturing and limited global supply concentration. The element is primarily extracted from rare-earth mineral deposits such as monazite and bastnäsite, often as a co-product with other rare earths including neodymium and lanthanum. Major producing regions include China, which dominates global supply, as well as emerging projects in Australia and the United States. Praseodymium is used in the production of high-strength permanent magnets, particularly neodymium-iron-boron magnets, which are essential components in electric vehicle motors, wind turbines and consumer electronics. It also finds application in aircraft engines, where praseodymium-containing alloys improve high-temperature performance, and in specialist glass and ceramics for protective welding goggles and fibre-optic systems. The element is typically traded and priced in oxide form as part of a combined neodymium-praseodymium product, reflecting the difficulty of separating the two elements and their similar end-use applications. Growing demand for clean-energy technologies and electric mobility has intensified interest in securing diversified praseodymium supply chains outside traditional sources. Praseodymium was first isolated in 1885 by Austrian chemist Carl Auer von Welsbach, who separated it from didymium, a mixture previously thought to be a single element.
