Permanent Magnets

Permanent magnets are materials that maintain a persistent magnetic field without the need for an external power source or continuous electrical current. They are essential components in a wide range of modern technologies, from electric motors and generators to consumer electronics and medical devices. The strongest permanent magnets are rare-earth magnets, which include neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) and samarium-cobalt (SmCo) types, both of which rely on rare-earth elements such as neodymium, praseodymium, dysprosium, terbium and samarium. These rare-earth permanent magnets offer superior magnetic strength and temperature resistance compared with traditional ferrite or alnico magnets, making them indispensable in high-performance applications. Key sectors adopting permanent magnets include automotive manufacturing, particularly for electric vehicle traction motors and hybrid powertrains, renewable energy for wind turbine generators, industrial automation, aerospace and defence systems, and consumer electronics such as smartphones and hard disk drives. The performance of rare-earth permanent magnets can be enhanced by adding heavy rare earths like dysprosium and terbium, which improve thermal stability and coercivity, allowing the magnets to function effectively at higher operating temperatures. Global production of rare-earth permanent magnets is concentrated in China, which controls much of the rare-earth supply chain from mining through to magnet manufacturing. Demand for permanent magnets has grown sharply with the global transition to electrified transport and renewable energy, driving efforts in other regions to secure alternative sources of rare-earth feedstock and develop domestic magnet production capacity. The permanent magnet industry is a critical link between rare-earth mining and the manufacture of clean-energy and advanced technology products.
