New Delhi

New Delhi is the capital city of India and the seat of the country's executive, legislative and judicial branches of government. Located in the northern part of the country within the National Capital Territory of Delhi, the city has a population of several million and forms part of a larger metropolitan area exceeding 30-million people. New Delhi serves as India's political and administrative centre, housing the Parliament, the Supreme Court, the Rashtrapati Bhavan (Presidential Palace) and the central government ministries. The city is also a major economic hub, with significant activity in services, technology, telecommunications, hospitality and retail sectors. New Delhi hosts numerous diplomatic missions and is a key venue for international summits and multilateral meetings, including gatherings of BRICS and other regional forums. The city's infrastructure includes Indira Gandhi International Airport, one of South Asia's busiest air transport hubs, and an extensive metro rail network. New Delhi was purpose-built as the capital of British India in the early twentieth century, designed by architects Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, and officially inaugurated in 1931. Since India's independence in 1947, New Delhi has remained the national capital and a symbol of the country's sovereignty and democratic institutions.
