National Health Insurance is a proposed universal health coverage system in South Africa designed to provide all citizens and legal residents with access to essential healthcare services, regardless of their employment status or ability to pay. The scheme aims to pool public healthcare funding and purchasing power to achieve equity in healthcare access and reduce the financial burden of medical costs on individuals. Under the model, the National Health Insurance Fund would purchase healthcare services from both public and private providers on behalf of the population, with the goal of eliminating out-of-pocket payments at the point of care. The system is intended to be funded primarily through general taxation, with contributions from individuals and employers phased out over time.
