MCSA

Minerals Council South Africa is the principal industry body representing the country's mining and minerals sector. The organisation serves as the collective voice for mining companies operating in South Africa, ranging from major diversified producers to smaller specialist operators. Its mandate encompasses advocacy, policy engagement, research and the promotion of best practice across safety, health, environmental and labour relations. The council engages with government, labour unions, civil society and other stakeholders on matters affecting the industry, including regulatory frameworks, transformation, investment climate and sustainable development. It plays a central role in collective bargaining processes and in shaping the sector's response to national policy initiatives such as the Mining Charter and carbon transition. The organisation also coordinates industry-wide programmes on occupational health, mine safety and skills development. Headquartered in Johannesburg, the council represents companies that account for the majority of South Africa's mineral production and mining employment. It was formerly known as the Chamber of Mines of South Africa, a name it carried for more than a century before rebranding in 2018 to reflect a broader, more inclusive mandate. The council remains a key interlocutor between the mining industry and the South African state, and its positions on taxation, licensing, infrastructure and energy supply are closely watched by investors and policymakers alike.
