Microgrids

Microgrids are localised electricity networks that can operate independently from the main power grid or in conjunction with it. These systems integrate distributed energy resources such as solar photovoltaic panels, wind turbines, diesel generators and battery storage to supply power to a defined geographic area, which may range from a single building to an entire community or industrial facility. Microgrids incorporate control systems and software that manage generation, storage and consumption in real time, enabling them to balance supply and demand autonomously. The ability to disconnect from the main grid and operate in island mode makes microgrids particularly valuable for enhancing energy resilience during grid outages or in areas with unreliable centralised supply. They are increasingly deployed in remote and rural settings where grid extension is uneconomical, as well as in urban environments seeking to improve reliability and integrate renewable energy. In sub-Saharan Africa, microgrids have emerged as a key technology for expanding electricity access to off-grid communities and reducing dependence on diesel generation. Industrial and commercial users adopt microgrids to secure continuous power supply, reduce energy costs and meet sustainability targets. The technology supports the integration of variable renewable energy sources by pairing generation with battery storage, smoothing output and providing backup capacity. Microgrids can be scaled from kilowatt-level systems serving a few households to multi-megawatt installations powering mines, hospitals or entire towns. Advances in battery technology, falling costs of solar panels and improved control software have accelerated microgrid deployment globally over the past decade.
