Glynnis Breytenbach

Glynnis Breytenbach is a South African politician and former prosecutor who serves as a member of Parliament for the Democratic Alliance. She is a South African national who has built a career spanning both the legal profession and politics. Breytenbach initially gained prominence as a senior prosecutor in the National Prosecuting Authority, where she worked on high-profile corruption and organised crime cases. Her tenure as a prosecutor was marked by controversy when she was suspended in 2012 amid allegations of misconduct, which she contested, claiming political interference. She subsequently left the National Prosecuting Authority and joined the Democratic Alliance in 2014. Breytenbach was elected to Parliament and has served in various shadow ministerial portfolios, focusing on justice, correctional services and constitutional matters. She is known for her outspoken stance on corruption, rule of law and accountability in government. Her legal background informs her parliamentary work, particularly in scrutinising legislation and executive action for constitutional compliance. Breytenbach recurs in coverage of justice reform, anticorruption initiatives and opposition politics in South Africa. She has been a vocal critic of state capture and has advocated for strengthening institutions such as the Public Protector and the courts. Her transition from prosecutor to politician reflects a broader pattern of legal professionals entering South African politics to address governance challenges.
