Gayton McKenzie

Gayton McKenzie is a South African politician, author and former bank robber who serves as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture. He is the leader and founder of the Patriotic Alliance, a political party he established in 2013. McKenzie rose to prominence through his transformation from convicted criminal to motivational speaker and author, having spent years in prison before his release and subsequent rehabilitation. He entered politics with a populist platform focused on crime reduction, job creation and community development. The Patriotic Alliance gained significant influence in the 2024 general election, securing enough seats to participate in the Government of National Unity formed after the election. McKenzie's appointment as Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture in June 2024 placed him in charge of South Africa's sporting bodies and cultural institutions. His tenure has been marked by interventions in football governance, including calls for reform at the South African Football Association and involvement in matters concerning the national team. McKenzie's political career has been characterised by direct, often controversial statements and a hands-on approach to ministerial duties. His background as a former gang member and his subsequent redemption narrative have shaped his public persona and political messaging. He continues to advocate for second chances and youth development whilst wielding considerable influence in South African sport and cultural policy.
