Enoch Godongwana

Enoch Godongwana is South Africa's Minister of Finance, a position he has held since August 2021. He is a South African politician and member of the African National Congress (ANC). Godongwana was appointed to the finance portfolio by President Cyril Ramaphosa, replacing Tito Mboweni during a Cabinet reshuffle. Before becoming Finance Minister, he served as Minister of Public Enterprises from 2018 to 2019 and chaired the ANC's economic transformation subcommittee, where he played a significant role in shaping the party's economic policy direction. His tenure as Finance Minister has been marked by efforts to stabilise public finances, manage South Africa's debt burden and navigate the fiscal challenges posed by state-owned enterprises, particularly Eskom. Godongwana has been a key figure in budget presentations and economic policy debates, regularly engaging with business, labour and civil society on fiscal reform and growth strategies. He recurs in coverage of national budgets, tax policy, sovereign credit ratings, state-owned enterprise bailouts and macroeconomic strategy. Prior to his ministerial roles, Godongwana held leadership positions in trade union and business circles, including serving as deputy general secretary of the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) in the 1990s. He later moved into the private sector and served on various corporate boards before returning to government.
