Energy Storage

Energy storage is the capture of energy produced at one time for use at a later time, enabling the balancing of energy supply and demand across different timescales. The technology encompasses a range of methods including batteries, pumped-storage hydropower, compressed air, flywheels, thermal storage and hydrogen systems. Energy storage plays a critical role in modern electricity grids by smoothing the intermittent output of renewable sources such as solar and wind, providing backup power during outages and enabling load shifting to reduce peak demand. Pumped-storage hydropower remains the most widely deployed large-scale energy storage technology globally, using surplus electricity to pump water to elevated reservoirs and releasing it through turbines when demand rises. Battery energy storage systems, particularly lithium-ion installations, have grown rapidly in recent years as costs have declined and grid operators seek flexible capacity. Energy storage is increasingly important in sub-Saharan Africa, where countries such as South Africa are integrating variable renewable energy into grids historically dominated by coal-fired baseload generation. The technology supports grid stability, defers transmission and distribution upgrades and can provide ancillary services including frequency regulation and voltage support. Governments and utilities worldwide are investing in energy storage to meet decarbonisation targets, improve energy security and reduce reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants. The sector faces challenges including high upfront capital costs, regulatory frameworks that do not always recognise storage as a distinct asset class and the need for skilled technical capacity to operate and maintain installations.
