Emfuleni

Emfuleni is a local municipality in the southern part of Gauteng province, South Africa. The municipality forms part of the Sedibeng district and includes the industrial towns of Vanderbijlpark, Vereeniging and Sasolburg. Emfuleni is situated along the Vaal River, which forms the boundary between Gauteng and the Free State province. The area has a strong industrial base, historically centred on steel production, petrochemicals and manufacturing. Emfuleni has a population of approximately 750 000 people and serves as an important economic hub in the Vaal Triangle region. The municipality has faced significant financial and governance challenges in recent years, including water infrastructure failures and municipal debt. Its proximity to Johannesburg and the industrial corridor makes it strategically important for Gauteng's economy. The name Emfuleni means "place of rivers" in Sesotho, reflecting the municipality's location at the confluence of the Vaal and Klip rivers. Emfuleni was established in 2000 following the post-apartheid restructuring of local government in South Africa.
