South Africa has seen a rise in rooftop and ground-mounted solar PV embedded generation in the retail sector, with the mining and manufacturing sectors also deploying renewables, according to the South African National Energy Development Institute. Small-scale embedded generation in residential areas and businesses is expected to continue growing, driven by higher electricity tariffs, declining costs of battery energy storage systems and solar panels, and the need for energy security.

The utility is also testing a new prepaid metering option for residential customers who wish to install rooftop solar while remaining on prepaid metering, with broader rollout planned once initial implementation requirements are confirmed.
