Electricity Access

Electricity access refers to the availability and connection of households, businesses and public facilities to reliable electrical power supply, whether through national grid infrastructure, mini-grids or standalone systems. It is a fundamental development indicator measuring the proportion of a population with access to electricity services sufficient for basic needs such as lighting, communication and productive activities. In sub-Saharan Africa, electricity access remains a critical challenge, with hundreds of millions of people lacking connection to power networks. The sector encompasses both grid extension projects and off-grid solutions including solar home systems, mini-grids and distributed renewable energy installations. Improving electricity access is central to economic development, enabling education, healthcare delivery, agricultural productivity and enterprise growth. International development institutions, multilateral banks and private investors increasingly deploy blended finance structures to accelerate electrification programmes across underserved regions. Initiatives such as Mission 300 aim to close the access gap through coordinated investment and policy reform. The electricity access sector attracts significant attention from impact investors, development finance institutions and energy companies seeking to address energy poverty whilst generating sustainable returns. Progress in electricity access is measured by connection rates, reliability of supply and affordability of tariffs for end users.
