Dada Morero

Dada Morero is the Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, South Africa's largest city and economic hub. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC) and was elected to the mayoral position in 2024 following a period of political instability and coalition governance in the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. Morero's appointment came after the ANC regained control of the metro through coalition arrangements with smaller parties, following years of shifting alliances and multiple changes in mayoral leadership. As mayor, he oversees the administration of a city that is central to South Africa's economy, with responsibilities spanning service delivery, infrastructure development, revenue collection and urban planning. His tenure has focused on addressing challenges such as electricity supply disruptions, water infrastructure maintenance, waste management and financial sustainability of the metro. Morero recurs in coverage of municipal governance, service delivery protests, coalition politics in Gauteng and the performance of South Africa's metros. Before becoming mayor, he served in various ANC structures in Gauteng and held positions within the Johannesburg council. His leadership is closely watched by business and civil society given Johannesburg's strategic importance to the national economy and its role as a commercial and financial centre.
