City Power

City Power is a municipal electricity utility owned by the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa. The company is responsible for the distribution and supply of electricity to residential, commercial and industrial customers across Johannesburg, the country's largest city and economic hub. City Power purchases bulk electricity from Eskom, the national power utility, and distributes it through its own network of substations, transformers and power lines covering the metropolitan area. The utility manages critical infrastructure including overhead lines, underground cables and substations that serve millions of customers. City Power faces ongoing operational challenges including cable theft, vandalism of electrical infrastructure and the need to implement loadshedding schedules during periods of national electricity supply constraints. The company employs thousands of staff including technicians, engineers and support personnel to maintain the distribution network and provide customer services. Revenue is generated through electricity sales to end users, with tariffs regulated by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa. City Power plays a vital role in Johannesburg's economy by ensuring reliable electricity supply to businesses, industries and households. The utility was established as part of the restructuring of municipal services in Johannesburg following the creation of the unified metropolitan municipality in the post-apartheid era.
