Border Management Authority

The Border Management Authority is a South African law enforcement agency responsible for the control and management of the country's ports of entry and border security. Established under the Border Management Authority Act of 2020, the agency became operational in 2022 to consolidate border control functions previously fragmented across multiple government departments. The authority's mandate includes preventing illegal cross-border activities, managing the movement of people and goods, and enhancing national security at South Africa's land, sea and air borders. It operates under the Department of Home Affairs and works in coordination with other law enforcement agencies including the South African Police Service and customs authorities. The Border Management Authority plays a crucial role in combating transnational organised crime, including smuggling, human trafficking and the illegal movement of contraband minerals and precious metals. The agency is responsible for border law enforcement, immigration control, customs enforcement and quarantine services at designated ports of entry. Its establishment aimed to create a single, unified command structure for border management, replacing the previous system where responsibilities were divided among Home Affairs, the police, defence force and other agencies. The authority's work is particularly significant in the mining sector context, where it helps prevent the illegal export of gold, diamonds and other minerals stolen through illegal mining operations. South Africa shares land borders with six countries—Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Eswatini and Lesotho—spanning more than 5 000 km, presenting substantial border management challenges.
