Boksburg

Boksburg is a city on the East Rand of Gauteng province, South Africa. It lies about 25 km east of Johannesburg and forms part of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. The city was established in 1887 following the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand and was named after the then State Secretary of the South African Republic, W. Eduard Bok. Boksburg developed as a major mining and industrial centre, with gold mining driving its early growth. The city is home to significant manufacturing and industrial facilities, including chemical plants, steel works and engineering operations. Boksburg's economy has diversified beyond mining to include logistics, retail and services, supported by its strategic location along major transport corridors. The city hosts OR Tambo International Airport within its municipal boundaries, South Africa's busiest airport and a key economic asset. Boksburg's population is diverse, reflecting the broader demographic patterns of the Gauteng urban complex. The city has undergone substantial transformation since the end of apartheid, with ongoing urban development and infrastructure investment. Boksburg remains an important industrial and logistics hub within the Gauteng city-region.
