Biosecurity

Biosecurity is the set of preventive measures and protocols designed to protect populations, agriculture and the environment from the introduction and spread of harmful biological agents, including infectious diseases, pests and invasive species. The term encompasses practices applied across human health, animal health and plant health sectors to reduce the risk of disease transmission and biological threats. In agricultural contexts, biosecurity measures include quarantine procedures, movement controls for livestock and produce, sanitation protocols on farms, and surveillance systems to detect outbreaks early. The discipline is critical to maintaining food security, as disease outbreaks in livestock or crops can devastate production systems and disrupt supply chains. Biosecurity frameworks typically involve coordination between government agencies, industry bodies and individual producers to establish standards for hygiene, testing, vaccination and containment. In South Africa and across the continent, biosecurity has gained prominence owing to recurring challenges such as foot-and-mouth disease, avian influenza and African swine fever, which threaten both domestic food supplies and export markets. Effective biosecurity requires investment in veterinary services, laboratory capacity, border controls and farmer education. The concept extends beyond agriculture to encompass laboratory safety, the handling of pathogens in research settings, and defence against bioterrorism. International standards are set by bodies such as the World Organisation for Animal Health and the Food and Agriculture Organization, which provide guidelines for member states to harmonise their biosecurity regimes and facilitate safe trade.
