AfriForum

AfriForum is a South African civil-rights organisation and lobby group that represents primarily Afrikaans-speaking communities and advocates on issues including minority rights, safety and security, and property rights. The organisation was established in 2006 as an initiative of the Solidarity trade union and operates as a membership-based body with branches across South Africa. AfriForum's stated mandate includes campaigning against crime, corruption and what it describes as unfair discrimination, as well as promoting community safety initiatives, legal action and public advocacy. The organisation is structured with a central executive and regional structures, and is led by an executive council and chief executive officer. Key functions include legal representation for members, public campaigns on policy issues, community safety projects such as neighbourhood watches, and lobbying government and business on matters affecting its constituency. AfriForum has been involved in high-profile litigation and public debates on topics including land reform, affirmative action, language rights and environmental management. The organisation has attracted both support and criticism, with supporters viewing it as a defender of constitutional rights and critics arguing that it advances a narrow sectional agenda. AfriForum is funded by membership fees and donations, and maintains an active media and communications presence. The organisation has also engaged internationally, presenting its views to foreign audiences and institutions.
