Project Description
The Phase 2 project is the long term solution to ensure sustainable water security for mining and regional users. The core function of the scheme is the distribution of purified bulk water for mining, industrial and domestic use, and will provide a sustainable water supply until 2040.

The project includes the upgrade of the water scheme, which comprises a raw water pumpstation, purification works, six booster pumpstations, several reservoir facilities and a pipeline network of about 470 km from the Vaal to Hotazel.

Capital Expenditure
The estimated cost is R18-billion.

Planned Start/End Date
The project is scheduled for completion by June 2027.

Latest Developments
The project has progressed to the engineering and design stage. 

Consulting engineers appointed by the Vaal Gamagara Water User Association have started specialist studies and detailed engineering design. 

Preliminary work on the funding model and market sounding is also nearing completion. 

Over the next 18 months, the project team will continue developing the Phase 2 programme, in line with the governance and funding framework being established between the Department of Water and Sanitation, and the commercial users.
