Mohammed Abdool has been appointed the CE of Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA), effective May 1.

He brings over 29 years of professional experience in financial leadership, governance and strategic transformation within South Africa’s public sector. He has served in increasingly senior roles at Transnet, including CFO of TNPA for over 16 years and most recently as the acting CE of TNPA.

In a media release, Transnet says his career reflects a consistent record of driving accountability, operational efficiency and sustainable growth.

As a custodian of strategic financial leadership, the utility says Abdool has demonstrated expertise in infrastructure ownership structuring, economic regulation and pricing strategies, procurement best practice, risk management and fraud prevention, strategic business turnaround and transformation.

Additionally, Transnet says he has played a pivotal role in shaping South Africa’s commercial ports, ensuring they remain resilient, competitive and aligned with national policy objectives.

Some key achievements in Abdool’s career include co-leading the accounting separation of rail operations from rail network business in preparation for open-access reforms, as well as directing the corporatisation process of TNPA, focusing on funding, asset valuations and tax implications.

“He is recognised as a strategic and tactical leader, a persuasive negotiator and an ethical executive. His leadership is characterised by resilience, innovation, and a commitment to transformation and stakeholder value,” says Transnet.

“Transnet looks forward to his leadership in advancing South Africa’s maritime transport sector and ensuring TNPA continues to deliver on its mandate for the benefit of all stakeholders,” the utility adds.
