Stainless steel bolt distribution company Bambalela Bolts has completed a large contract for the supply of hold-down bolts, bolts, nuts, washers of different grades and sizes and other structural steel items for a copper mine that is being constructed in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The company has been involved in this project since 2007. It has also supplied several mining projects throughout Africa.
The company is currently involved in the Gautrain rapid rail link project, supplying bolts and nuts for the rail link being constructed through parts of Johannesburg and Pretoria, as well as a number of other projects in Africa. It also indirectly supplies petro-chemicals giant Sasol with fasteners, through various contractors.
Bambalela Bolts MD Tania Williamson says that every project has different bolt specifications that it sources from local suppliers.
She adds that the company, which is a member of the Southern Africa Stainless Steel Development Association, distributes locally manufactured stainless steel bolts and nuts for different industries, and is able to label, bag and crate nuts and bolts for export to Africa, Europe, Australia and Madagascar.
The company also distributes structural stainless steel, and other stainless steel items, but focuses on nuts and bolts. Bambalela Bolts is an official vendor for State-owned transport parastatal Transnet, and will shortly become an official vendor for State-owned power utility Eskom.
Williamson says that the current economic crisis has affected the company’s turnover, but she expects that it will increase in May. Bambalela Bolts is currently tendering for three upcoming projects. If these tenders are awarded, they will sustain the company for the remainder of the year.
Meanwhile, she says that the company is a level four broad-based black economic- empowerment (BBBEE) company, but it aims to become a black women-owned company. This will classify it as a level-one or level- two BBBEE company.
The company supplies fasteners, which include a number of bolts, nuts, sockets and screws that are made from several grades of steel: high tensile, mild steel and stainless steel. In addition, the company supplies fastener-related products in various materials and grades of steel. Bambalela’s staff are mainly resellers and store the products in a large warehouse outside Germiston, Johannesburg. The range of items sold amount to 8 000 units. The range consists of metric and imperial sizes and includes stainless steel fasteners, hexagon socket head cap screws, high-tensile bolts, mild steel bolts, high-tensile and mild steel set screws, nuts and stainless and carbon steel threaded rods.
