South Africa co-hosts COP26 Energy Transition Council dialogue
The South African government on April 29 co-hosted the first Energy Transition Council National Dialogue to look at options to support emerging countries to unlock an accelerated energy transition ahead of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) Climate Summit, in Glasgow, in November.
The aim of the dialogue was to create a platform where emerging economies could connect with political, financial and technical leaders in the development community, as well as the global power sector, to establish how best they can enhance and align their cooperation in pursuit of a greener and more just energy supply.
The Energy Transition Council was launched by the COP26 president and UK politician Alok Sharma, and brought together donor governments and major multinational institutions in the fields of energy, finance and global experts.
South Africa co-hosted the dialogue with the British High Commission and the Embassies of Denmark, Germany and France, in association with the European Union.
The dialogue, led by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, provided the South African government with an opportunity to discuss its priorities, challenges and opportunities and how best the international community might support and accelerate the much-needed just energy transition in the country.
The South Africa Country Dialogue formed part of a larger process at an international level, led by the UK COP26 presidency, with similar dialogues taking place in ten countries including India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Nigeria, Kenya and Egypt. Two Energy Transition Council Ministerial meetings have already been held, with a third scheduled for July.
