Seriti confirms transport accident that claimed the lives of several New Denmark employees
Thermal coal miner Seriti Power has confirmed that a tragic road accident involving employees travelling to New Denmark Colliery occurred during the early hours of May 21 on the road between Standerton and Thuthukani, in Mpumalanga.
"This devastating incident has deeply affected the New Denmark Colliery community and the broader Seriti family. We extend our sincere condolences to the families, loved ones, friends and colleagues impacted during this profoundly difficult time. Our thoughts remain with all those affected, including employees currently receiving medical care and support," the company notes in a media statement.
It adds that the company's management is working closely with the relevant authorities, emergency services, organised labour representatives and affected families to provide the necessary support and assistance to those affected. Employee wellness and support services are also being made available to those impacted by the incident.
"Out of respect for the dignity and privacy of the individuals and families involved, Seriti will not be releasing the identities or personal details of those affected until all formal processes and family notifications have been concluded," it says, while urging road users to "exercise extreme caution", particularly during the current misty and low-visibility weather conditions.
Trade union the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union reports in a separate statement that misty conditions had led to poor visibility at the time of the road accident, but what role this may have played would still have to be determined during investigations.
The union says the accident claimed the lives of ten New Denmark employees.
