Communications group Samsung on Tuesday said it had renewed its contract with the Confederation of African Football to sponsor the Orange Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) for another three years as it launched this year’s fan zone initiative on Tuesday.

The company, which initially landed the contract in 2008 to develop and ensure fan engagement before and during the matches, commemorated this year’s tournament with the unveiling of Samsung’s core fan zone at Sandton City mall.

About 28 fan zones would be located in seven African countries this year, with a range of mobile Samsung branded “trailer” fan zones touring South Africa’s stadiums during the games, which will be held between January 19 and February 10.

The initiative has also gone digital, with fans able to access fan sites through a Facebook application or through smartphone mobile online platforms.

Samsung aimed to “bring the games” to the fans and ensure the fans’ interactive engagement with the teams. Football fans would also be able to take photos and share messages with other fans and the teams.

The communications group has also asked each of the team’s captains to act as ambassadors during the twenty-ninth Afcon and compiled, in conjunction with Nigerian musician Don Jazzy, the Samsung Football Anthem to be played at fan zones and Afcon events.

The 2013 Afcon would include teams from South Africa, Ethiopia, Mali, Tunisia, Zambia, Ghana and Algeria and would kick off on Saturday at the Soccer City Stadium, in Johannesburg, with South Africa playing against Cape Verde.

Matches would also be held at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, in Port Elizabeth, Rustenburg’s Royal Bafokeng Stadium, the Moses Mabhida Stadium, in eThekwini, and Mbombela Stadium, in Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit), Mpumalanga.
