Red Rocket: A force of nature

From Cape Town to the continent, independent power producer Red Rocket is leading the charge in renewable energy with people, projects and purpose. As a pioneering independent power producer and generation trader (GenTrader), the company secured its electricity trading licence from the National Energy Regulator of South Africa in December 2025.

But trading is only part of the story. Red Rocket is driving Africa’s clean energy future through solar, wind and hydro projects, delivering fully integrated solutions: from design and development to financing, generation, operations and asset management.

The company’s journey began in 2012 as the Middle East and African arm of independent power producer (IPP) Building Energy.

Following a management buyout, Red Rocket launched in 2020 as a fully African IPP. Today, over 200 Red Rocket employees work from its base in Cape Town, with many more driving projects from sites across South Africa and into Africa. The company has consistently grown from strength to strength since inception, and the sky has proven not to be the limit.

Certified to international standards including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO55001, Red Rocket has proven its commitment to quality, sustainability and safety.

The results speak volumes, and this is just a snapshot of Red Rocket’s recent achievements:

  • 656 MWp of solar capacity awarded in Bid Window 7 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP)
  • 746 MWp secured under the Value for Money allocation scheme (Bid Window 7 of the REIPPPP)
  • A landmark 400 MW Overberg Wind Farm, financed with two off-takers: Richards Bay Minerals/Rio Tin-Company Profile to and Discovery Green, in an award-winning first-of-its kind deal structure for South Africa
  • Early delivery of commercial operations at the Brandvalley and Rietkloof wind farms, setting the pace for Round 5 projects

Red Rocket’s portfolio (530 MW under operation and 1.1 GW under construction) now spans collaborations with Sibanye-Stillwater, Richards Bay Minerals/Rio Tinto, and Discovery Green, highlighting its role as a trusted partner in Africa’s energy transition.

Africa’s Energy Future Is Here
Red Rocket is not just generating power, it is setting benchmarks for reliability, flexibility and innovation. As a GenTrader, it cuts out the middleman to offer customers competitive prices straight from a generator with the flexibility of a trader. This unique positioning combines market agility with proven renewable expertise, giving clients and partners unmatched opportunities to secure sustainable energy with a customised solution made possible with a diversified asset portfolio.

With mining leaders such as Sibanye-Stillwater and Richards Bay Minerals/Rio Tinto among its partners, Red Rocket is already powering Africa’s critical minerals sector, the backbone of global supply chains and a cornerstone of the continent’s industrial future.

By enabling sustainable energy for these strategic industries, Red Rocket strengthens Africa’s role in the next wave of global growth.

Partner with Red Rocket. Power Africa’s future.
