Name of the Project
Pan African Resources renewable-energy projects.

Location
Barberton Mines’ Fairview operation and Evander Mines, in Mpumalanga, and Bela-Bela, in Limpopo.

Project Owner/s
Pan African Resources.

Project Description
Pan African’s renewable-energy projects include:

  • studies for the development of the 8.75 MWac Fairview solar facility at its Barberton operations. Based on preliminary studies, the facility will reduce the group’s carbon emissions by about 22 000 t/y of carbon dioxide. The solar facility is expected to have an economic life of more than 25 years, which is sufficient for the mine’s current 20-year mine life.
  • a power purchase agreement with Sturdee Energy for a 40 MW wheeled renewable-energy solution from its Bela-Bela solar photovoltaic (PV) facility, with the generation capacity being available to any of Pan African’s operations. The solar PV facility is expected to provide about 112 399 MWh/y of renewable energy for Pan African and will be connected to the Eskom grid by a 132 kV line in the area of Bela-Bela.
  • feasibility studies to expand the Evander Mines’ recently completed 10 MW solar PV facility by at least another 12 MW to secure additional capacity for the mine’s long-life 24, 25 and 26 Level projects.
  • feasibility studies for a solar PV facility for its recently acquired Mogale tailings retreatment plant, in Gauteng.
