The Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) is a professional institute with local and international links aimed at assisting members source information about technological developments in the mining, metallurgical and related sectors.

The key objectives of the Institute are to identify the needs of its members and to initiate and give effect to the means whereby the requirements for technology and scientific knowledge of the minerals and metals section of the South African economy are satisfied; and furthermore to represent and promote the interests of its members.

One of the SAIMM’s activities for September, 2023 is to co-host a Webinar with Rifle-Shot Performance Holdings (RSPH) highlighting the benefits of using the right technologies to minimize downtime and improve bottom-line.

Challenges experienced by most mines associated with downtime include manual data capturing for production, material movement, quality and equipment downtime data. Minimizing time spent by operators on capturing plant downtimes manually should be a priority. We all know that money is made and lost in operations.

Currently, many mining companies are trying to manage their Operational Systems downtime manually, using spreadsheets.

As Mining companies are embarking on a Business Transformation journey, a key priority area is the automation of downtime, so that they are immediately aware in near real-time of the downtime experienced across the value chain.

Manual capturing of plant equipment downtime data often means incorrect start and end times are captured, there’s no interlocking reason and description fields, classifications and analyses are a challenge, which leaves room for a lot of misinterpretation vs. factual data in near real-time.

In addition, various data sources in inconsistent data result in poor decision-making ability, and unnecessarily extending operational decision-making time. Lost time directly impacts bottom-line.

What’s required is total visibility of controllable time vs uncontrollable time, uptime, downtime, reasons for downtime, estimated repair timeframes and planned maintenance programmes, giving better decision-making ability, more control and cost reduction due to unexpected stoppages.

The goal is to reduce downtime hours and attain quantifiable benefits from reduced stoppages.

Naturally, everyone expects a quick and quantifiable return on investment. Tangible benefits can be quickly derived by being able to instantaneously identify and remove obsolete line items, and the ability to focus all attention on what is relevant and has tangible business impact on top and bottom line.

In addition, this will result in improved customer satisfaction – both internally and externally.

A proven software solution for managing downtime and materials management can make the difference between growth and stagnation, visibility vs fumbling in the dark.

RSPH has been providing business excellence enhancement strategies for the mining industry for decades. www.rsph.co.za

The intention of this webinar is to make our mining community aware of such technologies that minimize downtime and increase profit by increasing productivity, lowering maintenance costs and extending equipment lifespan.
