The National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) on April 29 approved Sasol Gas’ application for the maximum price of gas for the period July 1, this year, to June 30, 2025.

This results in the maximum price of gas being R84/GJ for end-user customers from July 1 to September 30.

Moreover, the maximum price of gas for traders and resellers from July 1 to September 30 is R79.80/GJ. Also, a minimum of 5% discount from a maximum gas energy price is to be provided to traders and resellers.

Lastly, Nersa has approved the quarterly adjustment of the maximum price with a three-month lag in its implementation until June 30, 2025.

The approved maximum price is exclusive of value-added tax.

Nersa says its decision implies that the maximum price level approved is fair and reasonable, after it has taken into consideration the provisions of the Gas Act of 2001 and the associated regulations.

The maximum gas price is expected to facilitate the achievement of the policy imperatives contemplated in the Gas Act’s objectives, the entity avers.

Sasol Gas applied for a maximum price determined on the basis of a ‘cost-plus’ principle set out in the 2023 Methodology.

The effective date of the approved maximum prices of gas will be June 1. The approved maximum prices of gas will remain effective until the date of approval of other maximum prices by Nersa.
