The Swartland municipality, in the Western Cape, is upgrading the wastewater treatment works of rural town Moorreesburg at a cost of R122-million, says Western Cape Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning Minister Anton Bredell.

The project is expected to be completed by January 2023. It is one of the largest capital projects in the history of Moorreesburg.

“The new facility will replace the old one, which dates back to 1975 and has reached the end of its life cycle. We believe continuously upgrading and expanding infrastructure to ensure that our people get quality basic services is necessary,” Bredell says.

Additionally, the municipality is expecting the South African National Roads Agency to start with major road upgrades to the N7 highway in the area this year.

The work includes the upgrading of the road surface and the upgrading of strategic crossings along this route. These upgrades are especially important to the agricultural sector, for the safe and reliable transport of goods to and from the farms in the region.

Further, the Western Cape government is also completing a new high school in the town of Moorreesburg, which is expected to be completed in 2022.

These projects will contribute to job creation in the region, but are also proof of the Swartland municipality’s ongoing efforts to ensure its towns remain economically viable and attractive for investment and growth, Bredell says.

“It is critical that municipal leaders constantly plan ahead and work with partners including national and provincial government, to ensure a better life for all the people living within its region,” he adds.
