Name of the Project
Impofu Wind Farm Cluster.

Location
Humansdorp, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Independent power producer Enel Green Power RSA 50% controlled by Enel Green Power.

Project Description
The cluster, with a combined capacity of 336 MW, comprises the Impofu East, Impofu West and Impofu North projects, which will encompass 57 turbines atop 120-m-high concrete towers.

The electricity will be produced under a wheeling framework agreement with Air Liquide Large Industries South Africa and Sasol, which are procuring the electricity to decarbonise the oxygen production facility at Secunda, which is the biggest in the world.

The project includes eight high-voltage substations and 120 km of 132 kV high-voltage overhead electricity lines.

Potential Job Creation
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
Not stated.

Planned Start/End Date
Construction started in March 2024 and entered commercial operation in June 2026.

Latest Developments
The Impofu Wind Farm cluster has entered into commercial operation.

The cluster comprises three 110 MW wind farms – Impofu North, Impofu East and Impofu West, with Impofu West having been the last to become operational, in June 2026.

The cluster is underpinned by three long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Sasol and Air Liquide, as well as a wheeling framework that facilitates the transmission of the electricity using the National Transmission Company South Africa network, in addition to enabling a private generator to contract with a private customer.

To link into the Eskom network, the Impofu project included the construction of a 116 km, 132 kV high-voltage overhead electricity line, which Enel Green Power RSA describes as the largest privately built power line in South Africa to date.

It also positions Enel Green Power RSA among the first IPPs to conclude large-scale wind PPAs for the commercial and industrial (C&I) market, one that has emerged as a rapidly expanding part of the domestic electricity landscape after regulatory changes made it possible for projects of any size to proceed without a licence.

While C&I procurement was initially organised around bilateral PPAs, such as the one underpinning the Impofu Wind Farm cluster, transactions are now also being aggregated through traders with diversified customer portfolios

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
