The South African Department of Home Affairs has initiated a major recruitment drive to hire 301 additional immigration officers, aiming to drastically bolster the country's border security and law enforcement capabilities.

This deployment addresses a long-standing personnel deficit that has strained the department's capacity to police national immigration laws effectively.

Currently, the department operates with a skeleton force of just 868 frontline immigration officers tasked with managing compliance across the entire country.

Through extensive internal financial reprioritisation, achieved despite severe, ongoing budgetary constraints, the department is expanding its operational workforce to 1 169 officers.

This targeted expansion will immediately increase the nation's frontline enforcement capacity by 35%.

This recruitment drive integrates into the broader "Home Affairs @ home" reform framework. The strategy focuses on building a secure, digital, and fit-for-purpose immigration system that strictly aligns with national interests.

The modernisation plans aim to implement modern systems, such as the Electronic Travel Authorisation, to seamlessly verify and enforce lawful entry at all ports of entry.

It will also invest in physical, on-the-ground law enforcement personnel to ensure statutory compliance across all provinces.

The department is actively collaborating with the National Treasury to source additional funding. These secured resources will finance ongoing digital transformation projects and capacity-building initiatives.

Home Affairs Minister Dr Leon Schreiber emphasises that this initiative represents a critical turning point for national security.

"For too long, just 868 frontline Immigration Officers have been responsible for enforcing our immigration laws across the entire country," Schreiber stated. "By appointing 301 additional Immigration Officers, we are now making one of the biggest investments in immigration enforcement capacity in years, strengthening our ability to uphold the rule of law and protect the integrity of South Africa’s immigration system."

With job specifications and requirements being finalised, the department expects to open application portals soon to rapidly onboard the cohort.
