50 years of world-renowned loaders and trucks
Sandvik is celebrating the fiftieth birthday of its Toro family of loaders and trucks for underground hard rock mines.
The first loader was a Toro 100DH loader with a ‘massive’ 1.5-t carry capacity, manufactured in Tampere, Finland. The design and production facilities later moved to Turku and in 2020, after 15 years of dormancy, Sandvik reintroduced the Toro brand, emphasising the design principles of safety, strength and intelligence.
The company highlights that safety is paramount for those who work underground with heavy equipment and it also the main driver in its product design. In addition to the safety of operators and maintenance personnel, the design aims to be sound from a sustainability perspective. Sandvik emphasizes that strength and power are at the heart of the old Toro heritage and robust design, reliability and performance in the most demanding conditions are also the foundations of its current offering.
State-of-the-art digital systems such as AutoMine and OptiMine are part of the company’s smart solutions offerings, which extend to operator ergonomics, ease of maintenance access and component layouts.
In August 2021 Sandvik introduced a new i-series loader, Toro LH515i, which was launched in Canada. With its 15-t capacity, compact size, intelligence and smart maintenance solutions it is designed to meet customer demands for productivity, efficiency and digital solutions.
The Toro range includes loaders and trucks in a variety of size classes and is suited for most market areas. The key technologies are diesel-powered loaders and trucks, cable electric loaders and, as a newcomer, a battery-assisted loader that the company says will be making an entry onto the marketplace soon.
