Namibia Critical Metals has approved the next phase of the definitive feasibility study (DFS) for the Lofdal heavy rare earths project, in Namibia, backed by about C$11-million in additional funding, with Toyota Tsusho and the Japan Organisation for Metals and Energy Security continuing to support the project. SGS Canada has been awarded the first major metallurgical and geometallurgical contracts, covering pilot-scale flotation and hydrometallurgical testing intended to validate production of separate light and heavy rare earth carbonate products, including dysprosium, terbium and yttrium.
Longonjo rare earths project stays on schedule as Toyota Tsusho anchors offtakePensana's $250-million Longonjo mine and refinery development in Angola's Huambo province is 22% complete and on budget, with first mixed rare earth carbonate commissioning still targeted for 2027. Toyota Tsusho holds a non-binding offtake agreement for up to 20 000 t/y of the product over five years, alongside ReElement Technologies and VAC/eVAC Magnetics.
Aeolus expands African renewable energy footprintToyota Tsusho's Aeolus platform holds 40% of a 900 MW wind farm near Ras Shokeir, Egypt, with ENGIE and Orascom Construction, targeting mid-2028 commercial operation, and 50% of Tunisia's 120 MW Sidi Bouzid II solar plant with Scatec, which reached financial close in June 2026.
