Constitutional reform sparks protests as Faye–Sonko rift deepensSenegalese police fired tear gas on June 29 to disperse protesters outside parliament as lawmakers debated a constitutional amendment expanding parliamentary powers at the president's expense, a move critics call a power grab by parliament speaker and former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The push has deepened divisions between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Sonko, whose May dismissal underscored splits over reform and a mounting debt crisis.
