Titanium

Titanium is a lightweight, high-strength metallic element widely used in aerospace, defence, medical devices, chemical processing and industrial applications. It is prized for its exceptional corrosion resistance, high melting point and favourable strength-to-weight ratio, making it indispensable in environments where performance and durability are critical. The metal is extracted primarily from the minerals ilmenite and rutile, which are processed to produce titanium dioxide pigment or sponge metal for further refining. Major titanium-producing regions include Australia, South Africa, Canada, China and Mozambique, with South Africa holding significant reserves of titanium-bearing mineral sands. Titanium dioxide accounts for the majority of titanium consumption globally and is used extensively in paints, coatings, plastics and paper. Titanium metal, though a smaller market by volume, commands premium prices due to complex and energy-intensive extraction and fabrication processes. Demand for titanium is driven by growth in commercial aviation, military procurement, medical implants and emerging applications in additive manufacturing. The industry faces challenges including high production costs, supply chain concentration and the technical difficulty of processing titanium ore into usable metal. Titanium has been commercially produced since the mid-twentieth century, with ongoing research focused on improving extraction efficiency and expanding applications.
