Amnesty International warns against xenophobic violence ahead of nationwide protests

Amnesty International South Africa executive director Shenilla Mohamed has cautioned against using asylum seekers, refugees and migrants as scapegoats for unemployment and inequality ahead of planned June 30 protests against illegal immigration. She warns that a broken asylum system leaving some undocumented for up to 19 years is inflaming tensions, and stresses that violence and vigilantism will never fix systemic problems but only destroy lives and deepen division.

Calls for urgent protection of human rights defenders intensify

Mohamed says three decades after South Africa adopted its Constitution, human rights defenders are still being silenced with threats, violence and death, with little protection or accountability for perpetrators. She highlights the February killing of Abahlali baseMjondolo activist Zweli Mkhize and criticises government silence, urging President Cyril Ramaphosa to enact strong legislation to safeguard human rights defenders and uphold international law obligations.
