Ryan Smith

Ryan Smith is a South African politician affiliated with the Democratic Alliance (DA). He serves as a member of the party's parliamentary caucus and participates in legislative oversight and policy debates in the National Assembly. Smith has been active in scrutinising government departments and holding ministers accountable through parliamentary questions and committee work. His portfolio interests include economic policy, governance and public administration. As a DA representative, he contributes to the official opposition's efforts to challenge African National Congress (ANC) government policies and propose alternative legislative frameworks. Smith's parliamentary interventions often focus on transparency, service delivery and fiscal accountability. He represents the DA's commitment to constitutional democracy and market-oriented economic reform. His work reflects the party's broader strategy of positioning itself as a credible alternative government in South Africa's multiparty system.

DA demands inquiry into high commissioner's reception of Zuma and Gupta in India

The DA has called on International Relations and Cooperation Minister Ronald Lamola to launch an urgent departmental inquiry after South Africa's High Commissioner to India, Anil Sooklal, hosted former President Jacob Zuma and fugitive businessman Ajay Gupta. DA spokesperson on International Relations and Cooperation Ryan Smith says Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni publicly reprimanded Sooklal, yet a parliamentary portfolio committee meeting revealed he may have acted on written instructions from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco), a contradiction Smith calls a sign of institutional capture. The DA has submitted written parliamentary questions and wants disciplinary action against whoever authorised the meeting, including Lamola if implicated.

DA challenges Ramaphosa's Zimbabwe visit and fraternisation with alleged money launderers

Smith has also questioned whether state funds paid for President Cyril Ramaphosa's May visit to Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa's private residence, where the delegation included businessman Wicknell Chivhayo, under Financial Intelligence Centre investigation over alleged money laundering exceeding R800-million. Smith condemned the visit, made as ZANU-PF pursues a constitutional amendment enabling extended presidential terms, and accused the ANC of propping up African dictatorships.
