Quantum Computing

Quantum computing is a form of computation that harnesses the principles of quantum mechanics to process information in fundamentally different ways from classical computers. Unlike traditional computers that use bits representing either 0 or 1, quantum computers use quantum bits, or qubits, which can exist in multiple states simultaneously through a phenomenon called superposition. This allows quantum computers to perform certain calculations exponentially faster than classical machines, particularly for problems involving optimisation, cryptography, molecular simulation and complex pattern recognition. The technology relies on quantum phenomena including superposition, entanglement and interference to manipulate information at the atomic and subatomic level. Quantum computing has applications across drug discovery, materials science, financial modelling, artificial intelligence and cryptographic security, with the potential to solve problems currently intractable for conventional computers. Major technology companies, research institutions and governments worldwide are investing heavily in quantum computing research and development, though practical, large-scale quantum computers remain in relatively early stages of deployment. Current quantum systems are sensitive to environmental interference and require extreme operating conditions, such as temperatures near absolute zero, to maintain quantum states. Error correction and qubit stability remain significant technical challenges that researchers are working to overcome. The field has progressed from theoretical concepts in the 1980s to experimental demonstrations and early commercial systems in the twenty-first century, with ongoing advances in qubit quality, system scalability and algorithm development.
