Proximity Detection Systems

Proximity detection systems are safety technologies designed to detect the presence of people, vehicles or objects within a defined hazard zone and trigger warnings or automated responses to prevent collisions and accidents. The systems use various sensing technologies, including radio frequency identification (RFID), ultra-wideband radar, magnetic field detection and infrared sensors, to monitor the position and movement of equipment and personnel in real time. In mining and industrial environments, proximity detection systems are installed on mobile equipment such as haul trucks, loaders, dozers and underground vehicles to alert operators when workers or other machines enter dangerous proximity zones. The technology typically provides escalating warnings through visual, audible and haptic alerts, and can automatically slow or stop equipment when critical thresholds are breached. Proximity detection systems have become increasingly important in the mining sector as a means of reducing fatalities and injuries caused by vehicle-pedestrian interactions and equipment collisions, which represent significant safety risks in confined underground workings and busy surface operations. Regulatory frameworks in major mining jurisdictions, including South Africa, Australia and North America, have progressively mandated or strongly encouraged the adoption of proximity detection technology on mobile mining equipment. Modern systems integrate with fleet management platforms and can log near-miss events, providing data for safety analysis and continuous improvement programmes. The technology complements other mine safety measures, including collision avoidance systems, operator training and traffic management protocols, forming part of a layered approach to workplace safety.
