Port Hedland

Port Hedland is a coastal town in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, about 1 600 km north of Perth. It is one of the world's largest bulk export ports, handling predominantly iron ore shipments. The town has a population of approximately 16 000 people, though the broader area supports a larger transient workforce serving the mining industry. Port Hedland's economy is dominated by iron ore exports, with major mining companies including BHP and Fortescue operating extensive port facilities and rail infrastructure linking inland mines to the coast. The port comprises two main harbour areas: the inner harbour at Port Hedland itself and the outer harbour at Nelson Point and Finucane Island. Annual throughput regularly exceeds 500-million tonnes, making it a critical node in global iron ore supply chains, particularly for steel production in Asia. The town's infrastructure includes residential areas, commercial facilities and industrial zones supporting mining operations, maintenance and logistics. Port Hedland experiences a hot, semi-arid climate with cyclone risk during the summer months. The port was established in the late nineteenth century and expanded rapidly from the 1960s onwards as Pilbara iron ore deposits were developed for export.
