Nevada

Nevada is a state in the western United States, with its capital at Carson City and its largest city being Las Vegas. The state's economy is anchored by mining, tourism, gaming and logistics, with Nevada ranking as one of the world's leading jurisdictions for gold, silver and copper production. Major mining districts include the Carlin Trend, the Cortez district and historic centres such as the Comstock Lode, which have attracted investment from global producers and exploration companies. Nevada's regulatory framework and geological endowment have made it a preferred destination for mining capital, with operations ranging from large-scale open-pit gold mines to emerging copper and lithium projects. The state's population is concentrated in the Las Vegas and Reno metropolitan areas, while much of its land area remains sparsely populated high desert and mountain terrain. Nevada's tax structure, including the absence of state income tax, has supported its role as a hub for business incorporation and data centres alongside its traditional resource and entertainment sectors. The state is also emerging as a centre for battery metals exploration, driven by proximity to electric vehicle manufacturing and renewable energy projects in the broader region. Nevada joined the Union in 1864 and has since evolved from a frontier mining economy into a diversified state with significant contributions to national mineral output and commercial activity.

Nevada's mining and critical minerals sector is advancing a wave of high-value projects across lithium, uranium, tungsten, gold and copper, with several companies securing major permits, finalising feasibility studies and attracting strategic partnerships. Lithium Americas is accelerating construction at the Thacker Pass lithium project in Humboldt County, with over 1 300 workers on site as of mid-May 2026 and mechanical completion targeted for late 2027; the company has capitalised $1.3-billion of construction costs to date and expects total capital expenditure of between $1.3-billion and $1.6-billion for Phase 1 in fiscal year 2026, though tariff exposure is estimated at $80-million to $120-million. Manhattan Uranium Discovery Corporation on May 21 received US Forest Service approval to drill at the Apex uranium project, Nevada's largest past-producing uranium mine, which historically accounted for 50% of the state's all-time uranium output, while Eagle Nuclear Energy launched environmental baseline studies at the Aurora uranium project on the Oregon–Nevada border ahead of a planned 27 000 ft drill campaign tied to a prefeasibility study. Minera Alamos has made a formal investment decision on the Copperstone gold project in Arizona following a prefeasibility study that outlines a net present value of $537-million at current spot gold prices of $4 500/oz, an internal rate of return of 154% and initial production targeted for mid-2027; once online, Copperstone will double the company's current yearly gold production from the Pan mine in Nevada, which produces between 32 000 oz and 38 000 oz a year.

Global copper producer KGHM Polska Miedz on May 28 signed an option agreement to earn 100% of the Eastside–Tango copper project in Nevada through staged payments and a minimum exploration commitment of $5-million over six years, with Great Western retaining a 0.6% net smelter return royalty; KGHM's wholly-owned subsidiary Robinson Holdings on May 27 also signed exploration and option agreements on four additional porphyry copper projects in Nevada – Royson, Big E, Tango and Whiskey – with execution and option payments totalling up to $915 000 and work commitments of up to $5-million per project over a six-year earn-in period.

American Lithium Corporation on May 26 was accepted as a member of the Defense Industrial Base Consortium, a US Department of Defense collaborative initiative to strengthen critical minerals supply chains, reflecting the strategic importance of the company's TLC claystone lithium project in Nevada and the Falchani hard-rock lithium project in Peru.

AngloGold Ashanti on May 8 reported record first-quarter free cash flow of $1.2-billion, almost triple the first-quarter 2025 amount, and declared an interim dividend of $585-million, or $1.16 apiece, while the board approved a proposed share repurchase programme of up to $2-billion; the company is bringing a large new production centre into operation in southern Nevada as part of its organic growth strategy. Kinross Gold Corporation is proceeding with construction of the Round Mountain Phase X underground project in Nevada, which received its final permit in January 2026 and is expected to deliver first production in 2028; the project has an initial underground reserve of 1.2-million gold equivalent ounces grading 3.2 g/t and is expected to incrementally produce an estimated 1.4-million gold equivalent ounces over an initial 11-year mine life at total initial capital expenditure of about $400-million.
