Monetary Policy

Monetary policy is the process by which a central bank manages the supply of money, interest rates and credit conditions to achieve macroeconomic objectives such as price stability, full employment and sustainable economic growth. Central banks use a range of tools to implement monetary policy, including setting benchmark interest rates, conducting open-market operations, adjusting reserve requirements for commercial banks and providing forward guidance on future policy intentions. The primary goal in most economies is to control inflation and maintain price stability, typically within a defined target range. In South Africa, the South African Reserve Bank conducts monetary policy with an explicit inflation-targeting framework, aiming to keep consumer price inflation within a band of three to six per cent. Interest rate decisions influence borrowing costs, consumer spending, business investment and exchange rates, thereby affecting overall economic activity. Monetary policy operates alongside fiscal policy, which is managed by government through taxation and spending decisions. Central banks must balance the need to curb inflation against the risk of stifling growth or increasing unemployment. External factors such as commodity prices, exchange rate movements and global financial conditions also shape monetary policy decisions. The effectiveness of monetary policy depends on the credibility of the central bank, the transmission mechanisms within the financial system and the broader economic environment.
