IoT

IoT (Internet of Things) is a network of physical devices embedded with sensors, software and connectivity that enables them to collect, exchange and act on data without human intervention. The technology connects everyday objects—from household appliances and industrial machinery to vehicles and infrastructure—to the internet, allowing them to communicate with each other and with centralised systems. IoT devices typically gather real-time data through sensors, transmit it via wireless protocols such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, cellular networks or low-power wide-area networks, and enable remote monitoring and control through cloud-based platforms. Applications span numerous sectors, including smart cities, where IoT underpins traffic management, waste collection and energy distribution; manufacturing, where it enables predictive maintenance and supply-chain optimisation; healthcare, with remote patient monitoring and connected medical devices; and agriculture, through precision farming and livestock tracking. The technology is a key enabler of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, driving automation, efficiency gains and data-driven decision-making. Adoption has accelerated as sensor costs have fallen and connectivity has improved, though challenges around cybersecurity, interoperability and data privacy remain significant. The global installed base of IoT devices is projected to reach tens of billions in the coming decade. Early commercial deployments emerged in the 2000s, with the term 'Internet of Things' gaining widespread use after 2010 as wireless standards matured and cloud computing became ubiquitous.
