Governance

Governance refers to the systems, processes and structures through which organisations, institutions and countries are directed, controlled and held accountable. It encompasses the frameworks of rules, practices and relationships that determine how power is exercised, how decisions are made and how stakeholders are engaged. In the corporate sphere, governance addresses the mechanisms by which companies are managed and overseen, typically through boards of directors, executive management and shareholder structures. Public-sector governance concerns the administration of government institutions, the rule of law, transparency, accountability and the delivery of services to citizens. Good governance is characterised by participation, transparency, responsiveness, equity, effectiveness, efficiency and adherence to the rule of law. Poor governance, by contrast, is associated with corruption, weak institutions, lack of accountability and inefficient resource allocation. In Africa, governance challenges and reforms are central to economic development, investor confidence and regional integration efforts. Multilateral bodies such as the African Union and regional economic communities promote governance standards and peer-review mechanisms. Corporate governance codes and regulatory frameworks seek to align the interests of management, shareholders and other stakeholders, while public governance reforms aim to strengthen institutions, combat corruption and improve service delivery. Governance remains a recurring theme in business and policy coverage because it underpins stability, growth and trust.
