Dan Marokane

Dan Marokane is the group CEO of Eskom, South Africa's state-owned power utility. He is a South African business executive who took the helm of the embattled electricity provider during a period of severe operational and financial crisis marked by persistent loadshedding and infrastructure challenges. Marokane assumed the CEO role in 2024, succeeding André de Ruyter and interim CEO Calib Cassim, bringing extensive experience in the mining and resources sector to the energy utility. Before joining Eskom, he served as CEO of Exxaro Resources, one of South Africa's largest coal mining companies, where he led the company through a period of strategic repositioning and energy transition planning. His appointment to Eskom was seen as significant given his deep understanding of the coal value chain and the operational complexities of large-scale industrial operations. At Eskom, Marokane faces the dual challenge of stabilising the utility's ageing coal-fired power station fleet while navigating South Africa's energy transition agenda and the utility's substantial debt burden. His leadership is closely watched by government, business and civil society as Eskom's performance remains central to South Africa's economic stability and growth prospects. Marokane's background in mining and his relationship with key coal suppliers position him uniquely to address supply-chain issues that have contributed to generation shortfalls. He reports to the Eskom board and works closely with Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe and other government stakeholders on the utility's turnaround strategy.
