Copper Mining

Copper mining is the extraction of copper ore from the earth for processing into refined copper metal and copper products. The industry encompasses exploration, development, extraction, processing and smelting of copper-bearing ores and concentrates. Copper is mined through openpit and underground methods, with openpit operations accounting for the majority of global production. Major copper-producing regions include Chile, Peru, China, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the United States, with Chile alone accounting for approximately a quarter of world output. The metal is essential to electrical wiring, electronics, construction, transportation and renewable energy infrastructure, making copper mining strategically significant to the global economy. Demand is driven by urbanisation, electrification and the energy transition, particularly the expansion of electric vehicles, solar panels and wind turbines, all of which require substantial copper content. Large multinational mining groups such as BHP, Codelco, Freeport-McMoran, Glencore and Anglo American dominate production, operating some of the world's largest and longest-life copper mines. Copper prices are sensitive to global economic growth, supply disruptions and inventory levels, with the metal traded on exchanges including the London Metal Exchange and the Shanghai Futures Exchange. Environmental and social considerations, including water use, tailings management, community relations and rehabilitation, are central to modern copper mining operations. The industry has evolved significantly since large-scale commercial extraction began in the nineteenth century, with advances in flotation technology, hydrometallurgy and automation improving recovery rates and operational efficiency.

Zambia positions Copperbelt growth on renewable power

Zambia is targeting an increase in copper production from 890 000 t a year in 2025 to up to three-million tonnes a year by 2031, with the Copperbelt's critical minerals mines increasingly requiring stable, affordable electricity. Elevated copper prices have boosted export revenues and strengthened the kwacha, supporting government plans for a Competitive Procurement Framework for renewable energy, including instruments such as the Renewable Energy Liquidity Mechanism and a Norway-backed Carbon Feed-in Programme to attract dispatchable solar and battery projects for mining loads.
