Solidarity questions impact of Telkom’s restructure on employees
Trade union Solidarity on Tuesday claimed that, within the next two months, 7 800 employees at telecommunications group Telkom would be retrenched or transferred to other businesses.
In a statement released following an “information session” with Telkom, Solidarity communications industry leader Marius Croucamp said the telecommunications group planned to offer voluntary severance and voluntary early retirement packages to 4 400 employees.
Telkom would allegedly also transfer 3 400 permanent contract workers, through a Section 197 business transfer process, to the companies Telkom had outsourced much of its portfolio to.
Over 700 employees had already accepted previous voluntary packages offered, while 1 170 employees had been transferred.
Croucamp said “each and every” Solidarity member’s retrenchment would be questioned, demanding that the job cuts be motivated at “company level, as well as at departmental and service level” in Telkom.
